How I Recovered from Dementia

By William Emmett Walsh MD

The dementias, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Lewy Body dementias, are simple to explain and understand. Poisons, also called toxins, contaminate all our foods. The body shields our brains from these toxins, but aging degrades this shield, and we suffer from dementia. Diet change can lead to recovery.

Now that is a simple explanation, easy to understand.

Or, perhaps it isn’t. Too many questions remain unanswered. For instance, you may ask yourself:

  • Do I have the background to discuss healthy and unhealthy diets?
  • How do I know that toxins contaminate foods?
  • What foods do they contaminate?
  • What shield protects the brain?
  • What degrades the shield?
  • How does diet change reverse dementia?
  • Why does he use a question-answer format?

A World of Wonders

Let’s start with the last question first. I find the world full of wonders; I often think of these wonders and ask myself why they exist. I then try to explain to myself their existence.

I use the same question-answer format in my books—I published seven books on allergy, headaches, food sensitivity and diseases like dementia. I hope that those who read my books find this format understandable; I find it easier to present this information using this format.

Why I Write

I will answer another question: Why do I write these books? I write because I am 83 years old. During my life, many people gave me great help. My wonderful teachers in grade school, high school and college encouraged me as a child and gave me moral support as a young adult. The excellent doctors who taught me in medical school helped me obtain my M.D. diploma. The well-respected doctors at the Mayo Clinic prepared me for my board examination in allergy and immunology.

I passed my tests; I thank each of them; I owe them so much. I write for them.

I write for friends and relatives that I have treated poorly and lost their friendship. At 83, my friends and relatives’ friendships are my greatest treasures, and I regret every friendship I lost. I write for them.

I also write to thank the wonderful patients who taught me so much. I believe that those experiencing the distress of disease gain a unique understanding of their illnesses, so I kept asking my patients about the illnesses and they kept teaching me. I often considered their thoughts mistaken until I discovered that they were not mistaken.

They were right!

For instance, children suffering red, itchy rashes taught me that a citrus burn of the skin causes the common skin rash called eczema or atopic dermatitis. I could not believe that until I saw that reducing or removing acids from the diet of eczema sufferers relieved these uncomfortable rashes.

Another example: A dear friend taught me that exaggerated reactions to MSG frequently cause painful migraine and cluster headaches, a cause still little appreciated. My patients’ teaching helped me successfully treat many of my patients. I write for these wise people.

An Unjust Surprise

Before going further, let me admit that life often surprises me.

After all my medical training, I received a book review from a reader who thinks I am a naturopathic doctor – I actually had to look up naturopath to see what it is. I am not a naturopathic doctor; I am a medical doctor like your pediatrician, internist or family doctor.

I do not denigrate the naturopathic profession; I hope my books help naturopathic doctors treat their patients. This misplaced review told me some unpleasant complications involved in publishing under a common name like William Walsh, M.D. The reviewer read another Doctor Walsh’s book and sent this scorching review to my book site. To avoid this confusion, I will sign my next book W. Emmett Walsh, M.D., empathizing my middle name, Emmett. I can’t find another author named Dr. Emmett Walsh.

Qualified and Passionate for Patients

You may wonder if I have the training and background to discuss food sensitivity. Yes, I do. I practiced for 40 years as a consulting allergist evaluating patients referred to me by their pediatricians, internists and family doctors. Yearly I treated more than 500 new patients with between 100 and 200 suffering reactions to foods. They taught me about the foods that cause many diseases. I later found these same foods also cause the dementias.

The diet I advocate for those severely afflicted, as I am afflicted, is challenging to follow. You may still object to following it because you suspect I do not have a laboratory scientist’s training and background. However, I do have the right experience.

At the Mayo Clinic, I spent a year in the immunology lab learning laboratory techniques. I considered staying in the lab, but I missed patient contact so much that I returned to patient care. Both patient-treating doctors and laboratory scientists contribute to diet care.

Lab scientists study food reactions; their work is valuable. A doctor like me organizes this information into a diet limiting or avoiding troubling foods. I love this latter task and am competent in treating food-sensitive patients.

Yes, I do have the background to advise patients on healthy and unhealthy diets.

As for the other questions: How do I know that toxins contaminate foods? What foods do they contaminate? What shield protects the brain? What degrades the shield? How does diet change reverse dementia? I answer these questions in my book How I Recovered from Dementia and in future books.

The present book is inexpensive, readable in two to three hours, and valuable in recalling the information I give you. The dementias require no advanced academic degree to understand; you can understand dementia.

If you do not have dementia, you do not need to follow my path to health except when you face a stressful experience that demands that your reasoning be super-sharp. Avoiding the foods that cause dementia helps even people free of dementia. If your dementia is mild, you may need to change your diet only minimally. With more advanced dementia, you need to more closely follow my diet to see if it helps you and continue to follow it if it does.

Before pursuing my treatment path, be sure to consult with your medical caregivers.

I hope How I Recovered from Dementia opens your eyes to the threats to your health posed by our diet’s poisons. Please tell me your thoughts after you read my book. To do this, return to my book’s page on Amazon, click on “Write a customer review,” and leave your note. I will learn from you as I learned from my patients and I will be grateful that you shared your insights.
